Non-Surgical Maxillary Expansion for Teens & Young Adults
The Modern Solution for a Narrow Upper Jaw
For older teenagers and young adults, traditional orthodontic expanders are rarely effective because the upper jaw (maxilla) bones are tightly intertwined. Historically, this left patients needing significant arch widening with only two difficult options:
Oral Surgery: Undergoing a Surgically Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (SARPE) procedure to help widen the upper jaw.
Tooth Extractions: Removing permanent teeth or performing slenderizing (interproximal reduction) to create space, which doesn’t address the underlying skeletal deficiency.
Introducing TAD-Supported Palatal Expansion (MARPE)
The good news is that we now offer a revolutionary, non-surgical treatment for effective maxillary expansion in older patients.
This advanced orthodontic technique uses Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs)—also known as mini-implants—to achieve true skeletal widening. This is often referred to as MARPE (Mini-screw Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion).
The result is more space created for:
-
Crowded teeth and a broader, more aesthetic smile.
-
Proper tongue posture, which can help improve breathing and airway health.
-
Long-term stability and a reduced need for future extractions.
Is This Right for My Child? (Early Teens to Young Adults)
This non-surgical expansion option is specifically designed for patients from early teens into young adulthood whose growth plates have matured past the point where a traditional expander would work. If you or your child has a narrow upper jaw or severe crowding, a TAD-supported expander may be the ideal way to achieve a skeletal correction without the need for surgery.
What to Expect: The In-Office Procedure
Treatment for TAD-supported maxillary arch expansion is completed in our dental office.Â
We use nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and local anesthesia to ensure the area is numb.
- We cement the appliance.
The placement of the small TAD screws in the palate is a quick and minimally invasive procedure.
Instructions are provided for activating the expander at home to achieve controlled, stable arch widening.
